Is Water Pollution causing cancer?

What’s Wrong with our Drinking Water?

Water pollution has become one of the greatest toxic loads in the history of our planet. Drinking pure water and removing toxins is important in maintaining health and avoid cancer.  Treating cancer alternatively looks at cancer and other diseases to see the effects of water pollution and how each of us can rid our bodies of some of the toxins that are in our water.

One hundred years ago, people died from contaminated water.  Cholera, diarrhea, hookworm, trichuriasis, were all traced to water.  With an increase in the population and the demand for water, came an increase in water’s contaminants.

Our municipalities have the enormous job of purifying the tremendous volume of water that flows into our homes.  They have kept the population as healthy as possible.  However there is more that each of us can do individually to ensure that we are drinking pure water.

Americans feel there is an abundant, never-ending supply of pure water.  Water pollution is often not a consideration when we drink water.  When we turn on the tap, only two percent of the water that pours out is ever used for cooking and drinking.

In fact, we live in one of the few countries in the world where you can drink from the garden hose without worry of becoming immediately sick.

Sadly, our aging water treatment and distribution systems were not built to handle modern-day contaminants.  Nor can our aging water treatment plants keep up with our ever expanding population and it would take billions of dollars to upgrade them.  Water pollution is becoming a major issue in cancer and other debilitating diseases.

Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines allow for “acceptable” levels of pollutants, such as chlorine, lead, arsenic, and aluminum in our water.

But even with these less than stringent EPA treatment standards, the 1993 and 1994 EPA reports indicate that some 53 million Americans drank from city water systems that violated EPA standards.  Water pollution and its effects on the health of the population is an issue that is being studied.

In 1995, it was officially recommended by the EPA that people with compromised immune systems due to AIDS, cancer, chemotherapy, or transplant surgery consider options for pure water for drinking as well as for cleaning and cooking foods.

In the past ten years we have continue to pollute our waters with more chemicals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals drugs.

It is true that tap water is mostly free of bacteria and parasites thanks to chlorination.  But bacteria represent only a fraction of the modern-day hazards present in our water.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, nearly one million people get sick from drinking contaminated water each year with about 1,000 of those cases ending in fatalities.  Water pollution is present in nearly all water supplies.

The nation’s 50,000 municipal water supplies are liberally laced with hundreds of potentially harmful substances that have long-term ramifications for our health.

There are more than 75,000 chemical compounds in our water with more being added daily.  They come from industry, agriculture, and consumers/homes.  Small doses of them in drinking water are ingested every day and no one knows what their long-term effect will be.

With water pollution in small amounts being present in many of our water supplies other options must be considered.  A pure water carbon filter/ultraviolet light water system in combination with a healthy, low-stress lifestyle provides a thorough and efficient way to maintain high energy levels and long term wellness preventing the development of cancer cells.

Treating cancer alternatively involves reducing the toxins in our body

The Pollutants causing water pollution

Landfills are still a major source of groundwater contamination in spite of new regulations.  Industrial waste and municipal sewage continue to make their way into our waterways.  Cesspools, septic system’s underground storage tanks, and lawn treatments all run off into our water.  Rain and snow also help pollutants and pesticide in the air find their way into the water.  Even radioactive waste finds its way into our environment as a result of inadequate disposal procedures and enforcement.

It is known that each of these situations affects our environment and our health.  To the extent that water pollution adds toxins to our body which may overwhelm our immune system is still being studied.

As I was dying of cancer, I really did not have time to wait for the scientific studies to come forth with the water pollution findings.  It was important to select a carbon – ultra violet water filtration home system and begin to eliminate the toxins that I was ingesting on a daily basis.

Treating cancer alternatively was my main focus.  I attempted to do everything I could to help my immune system begin to fight the cancer cells that was moving through my body.

Water pollution caused by Gasoline & MTBE

We use a lot of gasoline in this country.  Any seepage, leaks, spills, or accidents lead to contamination.  Gasoline hangs out on sediments and contaminates runoff water or water flowing through filtering beds on its way to underground aquifers.  There are thousands of underground gasoline storage tanks that still remain in the ground beyond their twenty year life expectancy.

One gallon of gasoline ruins 5 million gallons of drinking water

MTBE is a gasoline additive that has been used since 1980 to limit gasoline’s air pollution.  Experiments demonstrate that laboratory rats and mice that breathe or drink water contaminated to any degree with MTBE develop lymphoma, leukemia, testicular, thyroid, and kidney tumors.

According to a U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of Environmental Study, MTBE has contaminated about 1/3 of the nation’s drinking wells in 31 states.  Water pollution is a serious issue that has to be considered in drinking pure water for health and well being.

20 years ago 1 out of 10 people were diagnosed with cancer and other debilitating diseases.  Now we are faced with 1 out of 2 people being diagnosed with cancer.

Water pollution and the amount of toxins that our bodies are ingesting are increasing.  We are each responsible for the decisions we are making in the health of ourselves and our families.

Parasites as a form of water pollution

The CDC estimates about 900,000 cases each year of water-borne bacterial disease.  Even though many municipal supplies have been treated according to the Safe Drinking Water Act, millions of Americans are still wary of drinking tap water.  Studies show that as many as one-third of all gastrointestinal illnesses are said to be caused by bacterial and parasitic infections.

Bacterial and parasitic infections are the cause of at least 900 deaths each year.

Drinking pure water using a carbon filter system with ultra-violet light has become even more important as I consider these facts.  I felt like I was in a race against time in treating cancer alternatively.

I had taken for granted that the tap water or bottle water I was drinking was safe.  Now I had lots of questions and no time to waste.  It became important to invest in a water filter system that would meet my needs.

Cryptosporidium is a kind of parasite that causes acute and chronic cases of diarrhea, cramps, fever, and vomiting.  Because it is only 5 microns in size – 250 of them can fit on the head of a pin.

Cryptosporidium can slip through typical water treatment plants and enter our drinking water.

What is more, cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine.  Once ingested, this unicellular parasite hatches eggs in the digestive tract.  In 1993, 400,000 people in Milwaukee suffered from cryptosporidium contaminated tap water, and 104 people died.

As few as 30 parasites – one glass of water – can cause long-term infection.  There is no established cure.  Healthy individuals can recover in 1-2 weeks.

But crypto can be life-threatening to those with compromised immune systems.  About 50% of AIDS patients who contract the parasite die from it.  Individuals with cancer, on chemo or organ transplant, along with the elderly and chronically ill, infants and children are all at risk.

We live in Milwaukee – our carbon filtered ultraviolet water system protected us.

This system was one of 2 residential systems that were effective against the cryptosporidium.

Another chlorine resistant parasite is the protozoa guardia lamblia. Guardia causes symptoms similar to colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and lactose intolerance as well as cramps, diarrhea, and nausea.  It is often mistaken for other ailments.  One to two weeks of antibiotic or herbal antimicrobial therapy is required for recover.

Escherichia Coli (E.coli) is a common, nonpathogenic bacterium that resides in our digestive tract and that of animals.  Its presence in water is an indication of fecal contamination.  E.coli infection from water or food can cause dysentery-like symptoms.

One of the ways that the government is protecting the population from E.coli is by the irradiation of all of our fresh foods.  The challenge yet to be faced by the population is the effects of irradiation on killing the enzymes that are needed by our immune system to fight cancer and other debilitating diseases.

Keep in mind that treating cancer alternatively involves drinking pure water and allowing our body to flush out toxins.  There are many enzymes that organic whole food provides that are necessary for good health and the prevention of cancer.  E.Coli is controlled by good farming and professional sanitary care of our fresh foods from the farm to the table.

Additives to Water is a form of water pollution

There are dozens of additives used to treat municipal water.  Chlorine and fluoride are the most common and the most infamous.  There is a whole category of additives known as flocculants which cause pollutants to clump together for more efficient filters.

Even though the EPA classifies some flocculants as probable human carcinogens, it still allows their use in water treatment facilities.

It is estimated that in 99 percent of the US population, their fatty tissue contains one or more of the toxins created by chemicals found in water.  Dr. Ronald Klatz, MD, Pres. American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine

Chlorine

In the early 1920s, the U.S. successfully controlled the outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, dysentery, and other waterborne diseases using chlorine.

Today, chlorine is still accepted as the only cost effective method of killing bacteria in water supplies.  Ironically, this process that once rid our water of these infectious organisms is now responsible for causing a new breed of dangerous pollutants as part of water pollution.

Historically, chlorine was the world’s first biological weapon with its use as poisonous gas in WWI.  Later it was drafted for civilian use to poison the bacteria in our water.  At its most benign, chlorine makes it seem as if one is drinking from a swimming pool.

But chlorination is responsible for a more insidious problem.  It is extremely volatile and combines rapidly with organic, carbon based pollutants from industry and the environment, to form a new breed of dangerous chemicals call tri-halo-methanes (THMs).

There are hundreds of deadly THMs, among them carbon-tetrachloride, bis-chloroethane, and chloroform.

According to a Norwegian study by Dr. Per Magnus of the National Institute of Public Health, Oslo, THMs have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects.

These toxins are cause for concern in causing cancer and other debilitating diseases.  Dr. Magnus found that the use of chlorine leads to a 14% increase in overall birth defects.

In another study of 5,144 pregnant women conducted by the California Department of Health Services, women who drank 5 glasses of THM contaminated water had a 16.4% rate of miscarriage as compared to a 6.1% rate of those who had low levels of THMs in their water.

Immediately upon being diagnosed with cancer, we installed a carbon filter on our shower/tub outlets.  Pure water seemed to be a high priority.

We also installed an activated multi-stage carbon block with ultra-violet light on all of our sink faucet(s).

These chemicals pulls the larger family of chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as DDT, PCBs, TCE, 2,4,5_T have been linked to heart disease, senility, and cancer of the bladder, liver, pancreas, colon, breast, and urinary tract.

In addition to consuming disinfection byproducts, there is concern that water used in baths, showers, dishwashers and washing machines may contribute in indoor air pollution.  Chemicals resulting from chlorination of water become airborne when passed through appliances used in the home.  When THM contaminated water is used for showers, toxic vapors are easily inhaled.

Fluoridation of Municipal Water

Fluoride is without doubt the most controversial ingredient in water pollution.

Since it was first introduced into municipal water supplies in the 1940s, it has been the subject of a heated battle between established medical associations, scientists, researchers, politicians, and consumer groups.

Fluoride has been banned in Sweden, Denmark, Holland, and abandoned in Belgium and West Germany.    However these countries and others are adding fluoride to salt, milk and other products.

Fluoride is the 13th most necessary mineral for our bodies.  The question is in the method of intake.

How interesting that all the articles on the dangers of the fluoride in our waters does not take into account the importance of fluoride in our bodies.

You will have to make the decision.

Fluoride or fluorine deficiency is a medical condition in which a human or other organism lacks the necessary compounds containing fluorine to keep bones and teeth healthy.

The debate is the extent to which the condition truly exists, and its relationship to fluoride poisoning has given rise to some controversy.

Fluoride in a concentrated form is a poison.  Sugar in a concentrated form is also a poison to our system.  Should we ban sugar?

We must be careful to fully evaluate what we are reading and thinking.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride exists naturally in water sources and is derived from fluorine, the thirteenth most common element in the Earth's crust. It is well known that fluoride helps prevent and even reverse the early stages of tooth decay.

For over 60 years, water fluoridation has proved to be a safe and cost-effective way to reduce dental caries.

Today, water fluoridation is estimated to reduce tooth decay by 20-40%.

As of 2002, the CDC statistics show that almost 60% of the U.S. population receives fluoridated water through the taps in their homes. Some communities have naturally occurring fluoride in their water; others add it at water-processing plants.

The Controversy Over Fluoride

Opponents of water fluoridation have questioned its safety and effectiveness; however, there has been little evidence to support these claims.

Scientific research continues to support the benefits of fluoride when it comes to prevention of tooth decay and its safety at current recommended levels of 0.7 to 1.2 ppm.   Dramatic reductions in tooth decay in the past 30 years is attributed to fluoridation of the water supply, and parents and health professionals should continue to ensure that kids receive enough fluoride to prevent cavities.

The American Dental Association (ADA), the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), the American Academy of Pediatric (AAP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), among many other national and international organizations, endorse community water fluoridation.

The CDC recognized fluoridation of water as one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century.

There is a lot of information available about fluoride but the information is also sometimes conflicting. Some leads us to believe fluoride in drinking water is a good thing; and some says just the opposite!

Even information in clear opposition claims to have solid scientific backing – how can this be?

This situation led us to ask:

How can a person make an informed decision about whether fluoride is good or bad when everything they hear is so conflicting?

Fluoride is a community health measure that benefits people of all ages, income levels, and ethnicity.

Fluoride protects over 300 million people in more than 40 countries worldwide, with over 10,000 communities and 145 million people in the United States alone.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in all water supplies and when adjusted to optimal levels, is effective in reducing tooth decay and maintaining health.

Fluoride is not a medicine. Fluoride is a naturally occurring element and a nutrient. (Reference: Dietary Reference Intakes for Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Fluoride, 2004. National Academy Press, Washington DC)

John Dull, the chair of the panel, stated that... “we’ve gone with the status quo regarding fluoride for many years—for too long, really—and now we need to take a fresh look ... I think that’s why fluoridation is still being challenged so many years after it began. In the face of ignorance, controversy is rampant".

Excess fluoride consumption is dangerous even as excess consumption of any substance.

Hydrocarbons plays a major role in water pollution

Hydrocarbons are everywhere.  They are the mainstay of the chemical industry and they are both very stable and fat soluble.  When they enter our environment, they stay for a long time and are hard to get rid of.

Hundreds of millions of tons of hydrocarbon waste are produced in the US every year.  Many make their way into our water supplies through agricultural runoff, industrial effluents, sewage, and chemical dumps.  They end up in our rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater.

Hydrocarbons are so insidious; they have made their way into such far-reaching places as the fat of the arctic penguin and human breast tissue.

Water pollution has become a major factor in cancer and other debilitating diseases.  Water pollution has been treated and controlled by government agencies protecting the majority of the population from immediate sickness and illnesses.

However at the same time our water sources have many toxins that may overwhelm our immune system.  A healthy immune system is able to keep our bodies healthy and free of mutated cancer cells.  Pure water helps our immune system to flush out the toxins and mutated cancer cells.

Treating cancer alternatively looks at all aspects of health and options of keeping our body healthy.  Choosing a good water filtration system for pure water is a choice that may save you and your family from many different illnesses and diseases.
